From 1 December 2025, new rules make it easier for tenants like you, to have pets while still protecting Landlords’ properties.
Tenants need written consent to keep a pet. Landlords must respond within 21 days and can only refuse for reasonable grounds.
Landlords can charge a pet bond of up to two weeks’ rent (in addition to the general bond).
Tenants are responsible for any pet-related damage beyond normal wear and tear.
Existing pets on 1 December 2025 do not need new consent or a pet bond if already allowed.
Disability assist dogs are always allowed and exempt from bonds.
